The homeowner wanted to update the mantel with something more attractive. This walnut mantel was built to the custom size needed. The old concrete top was left in place, but the two protruding stone corbels had to be knocked off. The upper section of the walnut mantel (above the columns) was built as a "box" that fit over the concrete top.

In order to secure the vertical sections to the stone, wood blocks had to first be attached to the stone and the walls. The walnut sections were installed so that any fasteners were hidden by the next piece that was put in place. Most of the stone firebox surround was left exposed.
